2. Be Visible: Wear bright clothing and use reflective gear, especially if riding at dawn, dusk, or night. Equip your bike with front and rear lights.
3. Follow Traffic Rules: Bicycles are considered vehicles. Obey traffic signals, stop at stop signs, and ride in the direction of traffic.
4. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like headphones or phone use while cycling. Stay focused on the road and your surroundings.
5. Use Hand Signals: Communicate with drivers and other cyclists by using hand signals to indicate turns and stops.
6. Check Your Bike: Regularly inspect your bike to ensure the brakes, tires, and chains are in good condition.
7. Plan Your Route: Choose routes with bike lanes or less traffic. Familiarise yourself with the terrain and potential hazards.
8. Ride Defensively: Assume that drivers may not see you. Be prepared to react to sudden movements from cars and pedestrians.

Mental Health Benefits of Cycling:
1. Reduces Stress: Physical activity, including cycling, boosts the production of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. This helps reduce stress and anxiety levels.
2. Improves Mood: Regular cycling can combat depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine.
3. Enhances Cognitive Function: Cycling increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which can improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.
4. Promotes Better Sleep: Regular exercise, such as cycling, can help regulate your sleep patterns, leading to deeper and more restful sleep.
5. Boosts Self-Esteem: Achieving cycling goals, whether it’s a long-distance ride or a challenging trail, can enhance self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
6. Encourages Social Interaction: Group rides and cycling clubs provide opportunities for socializing and building connections, which is beneficial for mental well-being.
7. Exposure to Nature: Cycling often takes you outdoors, where you can enjoy nature. This exposure can reduce feelings of stress and promote relaxation.
