June 3, World Bicycle Day, sustainability and more

Radio suno lanka celebrated World Bicycle Day by organising a MEGA BICYCLE RALLY at Barwa Madinatna, yesterday, 2nd June supported by MARAM with more than 100 cyclists from different age groups.

Bicycle day celebrated on June 3rd every year, established by the United Nations in the year 2018. The idea of World Bicycle Day originated from Professor Leszek Sibilski’s (originator of the World Bicycle Day) advocacy efforts, which highlighted the social benefits of cycling, ”The uniqueness, longevity and versatility” of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, their contribution to cleaner environment and their significance in promoting active lifestyles.

Safety Tips for cyclists:

1. Wear a Helmet: A helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by 85%. Always wear one, no matter how short the trip.

2. Be Visible: Wear bright clothing and use reflective gear, especially if riding at dawn, dusk, or night. Equip your bike with front and rear lights.

3. Follow Traffic Rules: Bicycles are considered vehicles. Obey traffic signals, stop at stop signs, and ride in the direction of traffic.

4. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like headphones or phone use while cycling. Stay focused on the road and your surroundings.

5. Use Hand Signals: Communicate with drivers and other cyclists by using hand signals to indicate turns and stops.

6. Check Your Bike: Regularly inspect your bike to ensure the brakes, tires, and chains are in good condition.

7. Plan Your Route: Choose routes with bike lanes or less traffic. Familiarise yourself with the terrain and potential hazards.

8. Ride Defensively: Assume that drivers may not see you. Be prepared to react to sudden movements from cars and pedestrians.

Mental Health Benefits of Cycling:

1. Reduces Stress: Physical activity, including cycling, boosts the production of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. This helps reduce stress and anxiety levels.

2. Improves Mood: Regular cycling can combat depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine.

3. Enhances Cognitive Function: Cycling increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which can improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.

4. Promotes Better Sleep: Regular exercise, such as cycling, can help regulate your sleep patterns, leading to deeper and more restful sleep.

5. Boosts Self-Esteem: Achieving cycling goals, whether it’s a long-distance ride or a challenging trail, can enhance self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

6. Encourages Social Interaction: Group rides and cycling clubs provide opportunities for socializing and building connections, which is beneficial for mental well-being.

7. Exposure to Nature: Cycling often takes you outdoors, where you can enjoy nature. This exposure can reduce feelings of stress and promote relaxation.

Its important to remember the bicycle’s timeless appeal and its capacity to solve a variety of contemporary issues on World Bicycle Day. The simple bicycle provides a sustainable , healthy and pleasant answer as we deal with growing environmental problems and urban congestion.

Let’s honour the bicycles contributions to a greener environment and a more robust community today.
